In the first night of the Muskingum University OHSAA Division 3 Region 8 meet at New Concord, the Knights had several noteworthy performances and secured OHSAA State Qualifiers in two events to next weeks State Championships at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus. WH Junior Maddax Graham tossed the Discus 166’7″ to finish runner-up in the Regional earning his first trip to State. He will throw the Shot-Put in the Regional tomorrow attempting to qualify in his other throwing event. Also qualifying to the OHSAA D3 State Meet next week was the West Holmes Girls 4X800 squad of Senior Katherine Kaster, junior Breslyn Brown, 9th Grader Sophie Arnold and sophomore Iriel Mena who grabbed the final state qualifying berth, finishing 5th in 9:42.70. Their time moved them into the Top 8 All-time in WHHS 4X800 History. Scoring in the meet but failing to qualify to State in the Girls Shot-Put was Mallory Marmet, who made the podium in 8th place with a toss of 35’0″, just inches out of the last qualifying position. Mallory will throw the Discus tomorrow at New Concord. Rhett Chaney competed in the Regional Long Jump competition finishing 11th with a leap of 20’2.50″ and also led off the 4X200 Relay of Rhett, Garrett Obrst, Marshall Yoder and Mac Craft that had another season best of 1:31.44 but missed the finals by .22 seconds finishing 9th. Rhett also led off the 4X100 Relay unit of Rhett, Garrett, Cody Gallion and Mac. The team finished 14th in 44.88. Marshall competed in the 300 M Hurdles finishing 15th in the Prelims with a time of 42.78. Katherine ran in the blazing fast 3200 m Run finishing 13th in 11:56.95. The race featured the All-Time OHSAA Outdoor 3200 Best of 10:10.35 run by Sophia Szolosi from Athens. Running another Season Best but failing to qualify for State was the Boys 4X800 relay of Jimmy Wengerd, Parker Garver, Cole Troyer and Owen Mallasch that finished 14th in 8:41.78. The final event of the evening on Day 1 was the 4X400. The WH Girls squad of Breslyn Brown, Iriel Mena, Alizah Sigler and Katherine placed 14th with a time of 4:19.40 but failed to advance to the finals. Competing on Saturday May 30 in the Regional Finals are Maddax in the Shot-Put, Mallory in the Discus, Katherine in the 1600 m Run and both Breslyn and Iriel in the Finals of the 800 m Run. The Top 5 in each event advances to the OHSAA D3 State Championships next Friday and Saturday in Columbus.
